Oscar Piastri took part in a private test with McLaren in France – reports

A French media reports that Oscar Piastri has already started his career with his new team McLaren completing a test drive for the team.

Australian driver Oscar Piastri is joining McLaren’s team in 2023 replacing Daniel Ricciardo. The rookie has an impeccable junior racing record and is looked upon as the latest hot entry in Formula 1. The 2021 Formula 2 Champion is believed to have tested a previous-spec McLaren F1 car. Although no official confirmation has been received from McLaren on this matter it is believed Piastri drove on Wednesday and Thursday. The sessions took place on a track in the South of France.

Has Piastri now officially joined the McLaren squad?

Alpine and McLaren were involved in a weeks-long squabble over the issue of who will get the services of Piastri. The matter soon reached FIA’s Contract Recognition Board (CRB). The board ended the trial in favor of McLaren much to the dismay of Alpine.

This meant that the Enstone-based squad had to turn away from Oscar Piastri – their best available promotion to replace Fernando Alonso. The team has now turned to Jack Doohan for the FP1 sessions. French Driver Pierre Gasly will be joining the side in 2023 as a replacement for Alonso. He will be joining forces with his French counterpart, Esteban Ocon, from next season.

However, the thing is contract of Piastri with Alpine is yet to end. Given how the relationships severed due to the chaos, it was expected that we would not see Piastri in any of the sessions for Alpine. Team principal Otmar Szafnauer also indicated this earlier. However, now it seems that the team has reached an agreement with McLaren to allow the Australian to take part in McLaren test sessions a few weeks before the official end of the said contract.

This is a rather surprising news given the feud that arose between the two sides following the contract quarrel.
