Temetrius Jamel Morant, also known as Ja Morant, was born to Jamie and Tee on August 10, 1999 in Dalzell, South Carolina. His mother was a point guard in high school before switching to softball in college, and his father had previously played basketball at Claflin University. Teniya, his younger sibling, is a basketball player as well. As a child, Morant and his father played basketball in the backyard. He later played for the South Carolina Hornets in the Amateur Athletic Union. Morant attended Crestwood High School for his education and participated in hoops there. Murray State University’s basketball team unintentionally came across Morant in July 2016 when associate coach James Kane saw him competing in a game at a camp’s auxiliary gym. Morant made his Murray State debut in a 118-61 victory over Brescia University in November 2017. He recorded his first double-double of his career the following month in a defeat to Saint Louis University. Soon after, Morant defeated Eastern Illinois while recording his first triple-double of his career. He later assisted Murray State in making it to the NCAA Tournament, where they eventually lost to West Virginia in the first round.

Morant really started to shine as a Murray State junior. He had 26 points and 11 assists in his season start against Wright State, leading to a 74-53 win. Later, he tallied a season-high 38 points in a defeat to Alabama. Early in 2019, Morant (18 assists) surpassed Murray State’s previous mark for the most assists in a single contest. A little more than a week later, in a victory over SIU Edwardsville, he scored 40 points, setting a new career best. Over the course of the rest of the season, Morant continued to achieve success, setting new assists marks for his school and the OVC. Morant received the OVC Defender of the Year award at the conclusion of the regular season.
