The Indian football team is one of the best teams in Asia. The Indian football team is control by the All Indian Football Federation (AIFF).

Indian Football team has had several competitive records since their 1924 debut match. The year 1950- 60 is known as the golden era in the history of Indian football

Indian Football team: History of competitive records

FIFA World cup

Indian Football team got a chance to qualify for FIFA World Cup in the year 1950 after India got independence in 1947. They got an opportunity to qualify by default due to other team’s of the same group Myanmar, Indonesia, and Phillippines. Because they have withdrawn their name from the qualifiers of the FIFA World Cup 1950.

Before starting the tournaments the Indian team had to withdraw their name from the FIFA World Cup. Due to the expensive requirements which are need for going to Brazil for the World cup. And the FIFA association don’t allow the team India to play barefoot

The Indian football team could not qualify themselves for the qualifying round of the FIFA World Cup tournament from 1954 to 1980 after they had withdrawn their name in 1950 from the FIFA World Cup. From the year 1986 to 2022 team India enters the qualifying rounds of the FIFA World Cup but they could not qualify themselves in final rounds.

AFC Asian Cup

In 1964 Indian Football team qualified for the first time for AFC Asian cup where the team Indian finishes the tournament as the second runners up in the 1964 AFC Asian Cup. Inder Singh the Indian player becomes a top scorer jointly in the tournament.

After 1964 qualifying for the Asian cup team India fails to qualify in four AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980. After 20 years India qualifies in 1984 for the second time in AFC Asian Cup but India couldn’t reach the knock stage. For the third time, India got to qualify in the year 2011 for the Asian cup but the same result as in the previous Asian cup tournament.

In 2019 India again qualify for the fourth time in the AFC Asian cup they were again eliminate in the group stage of the tournament.

Olympics

Indian Football team played their first Olympics match in 1948 Olympics at Great Britan against France. It is the first international match for India after their Independence in 1947.

In Olympic matches, most of the Indian players are play with their barefoot. India lost their Olympic match and got knocke out of the tournament.

India again got qualify for their second Olympic tournament but India lost in the preliminaries with a big margin defeat of 10-1 against Yugoslavia.

Three-time consecutively India qualify for their third Olympic in 1956 where India reach up to the semifinals of the Olympics. But in their semifinals against their previous Olympic opponent, Yugoslavia again defeated team India with a scoreline of 2-1 and fail to reach the final match.

After got defeat in the semifinals to match India played against Bulgaria in their Bronze medals match. Where India also lost their Bronze medal match by a scoreline of 4-1 and India finish their campaign in 4th position of Olympic 1956.

After their defeat in 1956 India again qualify the fourth time in a row for the Olympics. In this Olympics, India got out in the Group stage match. After their fourth Olympics Indian football team could not avail to qualify for any Olympics till now

Asian Games

Indian Football team win their first gold medal in the Asian games only. Firstly, India played their first Asian game against Indonesia in their homegrown as in 1951 India host the Asian Games.

During that, winning their knock out stage India played their semi-final match against Japan. India defeat to reach the Final of Asian Games, 1951 where India will face Iran. India won their final match against Iran and become the Gold medalist in the Asian Games. On the other hand, India also becomes the first Asian football Champions. After that,wining in the 1951 Asian Games, the next two are not that great although they reach the semifinals in third two years of defeat in the India come back much stronger than ever and win their second title after defeating the Asian cup champions South Korea in the final of the 1962 Asian Games. their unsuccessful in 1966, India had to settle themselves in the Bronze Medals only in the 1970. After 1970 India could not win any title in their 5 years appearance

SAFF Championship

In SAFF Championship India has the highest title record as they won seven SAFF Championship titles in their 12 season appearances in the Championship.

India’s first SAFF Championship is not that good as they couldn’t qualify for the knockout stage and got eliminate in the Group stage only. Except for their bad campaign in 1993 SAFF, India has a good performances record. As India played all Knockout matches in their 11 years appearance and played almost all SAFF Championship final matches except 1993 and 2003.

Above all, in 2003 India had to settle themselves only with the Bronze medal. Indian Football team won their seven SAFF Championship titles in the year 1997, 1999, 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2015. India also qualifies for their 2021 SAFF Championship.

 

Indian Football team: Top five-goal scorer

1.Sunil Chhetri:

The current Captain of the Indian Football team Sunil Chhetri is the highest International goalscorer for India. However, Chhetri played 116 matches for India from his debut in 2005 to 2021 July and he scores 74 goals for team India. But, he is also the third-highest goals scorer in the world for the country and comes after Leo Messi and Ronaldo.

 

2.I.M. Vijayan:

The former Indian Forward I.M. Vijaya is the Second highest international goalscorer for India after Sunil Chhetri.

Vijayan in his 15 years of appearance for India he has played 66 matches and scores 29 goals for India in international matches

 

3.Baichung Bhutia:

The former Captain and star player Baichung Bhutia is the third-highest International goalscorer for India after Sunil Chhetri and I.M. Vijayan.

Baichung debuts his international career in 1995 for India and played 16 years for India and got retired in 2011. In total, he plays 82 matches where he scores 27 goals for India in international matches.

 

4.Shabbir Ali:

Firstly, the number fourth position of the highest International goalscorer is tied between two Indian Center forward Shabbir Ali and Jeje Lalpekhlua. In addition, the ex Indian Forward Shabbir Ali has played 66 international matches for India where he scores 23 goals.

Jeje Lalpekhlua: Indian sniper forward is the Indian player but, he is not a part of Indian squad currently because of his lack of form and injuries several times in past years. However in total, he has plays 56 international matches for India till now and scores 23 goals for India.

 

5.Magan Singh Rajvi:

Therefore, again in the fifth position of highest international goalscorer for India is got tied. Between Magan Singh Rajvi and P.K Banerjee in terms of 15 goals for both of them. However, the former Indian forward Magan Singh Rajvi secures the fifth position because of his less appearance in international matches for India. Magan Singh played only 6 years for India. Where he got to play for 33 international matches and he avail to score 15 goals for India
