Beth Mooney to captain Gujarat Giants

Gujarat Giants has announced Australian opener Beth Mooney as their captain in the Women’s Premier League. And it’s not even 24 hours after her appreciable knock of 74 runs not out in the final match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, she got another responsibility to take on the captainship of the Giants.

The Southpaw’s bag with full of runs

The left-handed batswoman achieved the ‘Player of the Match’ award and became Australia’s top run-getter in the tournament after accumulating 206 runs across six games. She has won the Women’s Big Bash League thrice already. The hitter has 2,350 runs in her bag within 83 games including 2 centuries and 17 half-centuries in Women’s T20Is.

She said that she is happy to have Sneh Rana as her deputy-in-chief. She further said that she’s grateful to have Mithali Raj, Rachael Haynes, and Nooshin Al Khadeer on the team.

The 29 years old got the position of current No1 women’s batter. And it’s not just after a T20 World Cup, she has been part of Australia’s multiple World Cups since 2018. She has played in the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2022 as well. Mooney was one of the eleven players, who played in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and brought Gold to their tent.

Sneh Rana as Vice-captain

Also, the franchise has chosen Indian player Sneh Rana as a deputy-in-chief. She has played 25 games in T20Is and bagged 24 wickets with an economy rate of 6.21.

She responded, “Being the vice-captain of the Adani Gujarat Giants is a huge responsibility and I am keenly looking forward to putting up a great show for the debut edition of the Women’s Premier League. Along with captain Beth Mooney, I hope to lead a strong and talented squad during the tournament.”

The franchise showed its gratitude towards these two magnificent players. Head coach Rachael Haynes said that it’s great to have a combination of Mooney and Rana on the team. “Both players are well-established, and I expect the team to put their best foot forward. We are excited about our new innings.”

WPL starting from march

The first season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is all set to begin its journey with five franchises. the season’s first match is on 4th March at 7.30 pm. The matches are in March 2023 and the venues are Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Five franchises are- Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz. In these teams, only Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians are left to announce their captains’ names. The discussed franchise, Adani Gujarat Giants will be playing their first match on the opening day against Mumbai Indians.
